Since the California license plate measures 6 x 12 inches, the length to width ratio of the design should be 2:1. The plate should include the word “California” written in red cursive at the top. Your submission should also have a makeshift 6 or 7-digit plate ID for off-centered or centered plates, respectively. DMV regulations limit the number of colors of existing license plates: for now, please limit your design to a maximum of 4-5 colors. 

We'd love to see the Golden Gate Bridge (a nod to the gold ribbon for childhood cancer). We're open to other landmarks too, as long as iconic California scenery is a major part of the design. Landmarks give the plate broad public appeal, and no California plate currently features a major landmark like the Golden Gate Bridge. For potential design inspiration, please refer to this page.

Since we want this plate to resonate with everyone, the ribbon should blend gracefully into the design rather than stand out as the main feature. For inspiration, see how the gold ribbon is woven into this image.
